Three score and ten

That's when I knew my seventieth birthday wasn't far away. And here I am, with seventy candles burning bright and not enough breath left to blow them out. How did I get here so fast?

Of course, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done and things I should have done, but there are also many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

Have I learnt from my mistakes? Of course, I have learnt from my mistakes and can repeat them exactly! ☺ Now help me with those candles!

P.S. Want breakfast in bed? Well, either sleep in the kitchen or wait until your 70th birthday. I'm the one on the right ☺

What real estate agents won’t tell you

Consumers can now buy and sell their homes online at a fraction of the cost of an agent by using websites such as PropertyNow.

This site acts like a virtual real estate agent. Depending on how many bells and whistles you’re prepared to pay for, it helps you to arrange professional photographs, a for-sale board at the front of your house and even provide the vendor with general over-the-phone advice when negotiating with buyers.

Many people have already learnt that marketing your home isn’t really that hard. Hundreds of thousands of properties are listed for sale through the portals www.realestate.com.au, allhomes.com.au and domain.com.au. Some consumers are even using Facebook and Twitter to sell their homes.

I mean, who better to sell my house than me? I know the best place to have a coffee and take in the morning sunrise. I know where all the local amenities are. I am able to sell the emotional attachment I have to the house; the agent doesn't have any. I can give the interested buyer what no agent can: a vivid account of what it’s like to live in the property and neighbourhood.

Try me!

The invasion of Europe

Hundreds of Senegalese immigrants rampaged through the Spanish seaside resort of Salou in Costa Daurada. The African immigrants smashed shops, restaurants, police and random people. Just another day in multicultural Europe.

Talk about chewing off the arm that feeds you!

And here's more of the same in Italy:

Read the Pickering Post.

And have a really good listen to this:

Sunday morning coming down

Thanks to some wit who had scratched off the letters P, R, O, H, I and D, I was able to walk the dogs on Casey's Beach this morning while Padma was doing her God-bothering stuff at the Catholic Saint Bernard's Church in Batehaven.

In the small car park at the end of the beach was an old four-wheel drive with a trailer hitched up to it in which the occupant and his dog 'Buddy' had just spent a comfortable night. A million-dollar view and no sound other than the surf - and not a cent to pay for it!

The trailer is all that's left of the occupant's Jim's Mowing franchise which he had tried to sell to another sucker but couldn't because, as he told me, what little profit it makes goes straight to the franchisors. So, he had chucked a comfy mattress onto it, covered the lot with a tarpaulin, and set off to travel round Australia, next stop Byron Bay.

We parted company when his fishing reel started screaming and he had to rush to the beach to take in his breakfast, a freshly-caught bream. "Good luck to you and 'Buddy'!"

Mind you, I get a bit cagey about talking to stranger after yesterday's experience at the swimming pool. Taking a break in between laps, I sat on a bench by the pool next to a young, quite handsome Chinese-looking guy when this monstrously-fat Aussie sheila with a toddler by her side came waddling towards us. I was just about to say to my Chinese neighbour, "Who the hell would've f&%^#d her?", when she waddled right up to him and asked, "Darl', 'been waiting long?" Phew!!!

Dropped in at my favourite op-shop on the way home. Having picked up no more than a slim paperback, I apologised to the old lady by the door for spending only a dollar. "Never mind, dear", she said, "come back next week after pension-day." I reckon I must look the part.

9/11

Have just been watching this documentary on 9/11. No, not 9/11/2001 but 9/11/1683 (September the 11th, 1683) when the Battle of Vienna began.

History repeats itself except that today's invading armies are dressed in designer jeans and carry smartphones, and their "Golden Apple" is Berlin rather than Vienna.

Different century, different place, same intentions - and this time they seem to succeed!
