By the time one has money to burn, the fire will have died out

We all have our down-days, I perhaps more than most, because I've done so much in my life, and the more things one has done in life, the more regrets one has about the things one has done but shouldn't have done.

But enough of all those "one has done" and "one shouldn't have done" ruminations. As one old friend once remarked, "Peter, you've done enough for several lifetimes!", which may suggest that I've also made mistakes enough for several lifetimes. (This friend's email account has since been cancelled and his mobile phone has also been disconnected, which may suggest that he's done one last thing which I have yet to do.)

The most comforting thing about growing old gracefully is the increasing ability not to take things too seriously. What helps me not to take things too seriously is watching some of the video clips by "Reflections of Life".

I like "Living Without", where the chap living on St Helena says in his South African accent, "By the time one has money to burn, the fire will have died out." Why didn't someone tell me this already fifty years ago?
