I'd been conceived just a few months before the 8th of May 1945 but I had to wait another four months before I could join the millions of bombed-out and starving Germans who had somehow managed to survive Hitler's madness of a "Thousand-Year Reich".
By the time my own memories kick in, much of the rubble had been removed and the street had been swept, but we were still bombed out and starving, and so, by the time I was old enough to leave, I did.
