The Cancer Finishing School

If you live long enough, you will get cancer! The body's immune system simply runs out of ammunition to kill of the rogue cancer cells which constantly attack it. It makes Peter Goldsworthy's latest book "The Cancer Finishing School" more than just topical - it makes it, at least for me, also very personal.

I had, of course, read his book "Maestro" and also watched the movie, but I was unaware of this latest book until I listened late last night to - yes, you guessed it! - ABC Radio National's Late Night Live. This latest book opens with his poem "Tomorrow" which simply blew me away:

A GP of forty years’ practice, as well as one of Australia’s most awarded and celebrated writers, Goldsworthy (‘Doctor Pete’ to his patients) brings his characteristic black humour and storytelling power to the tale of his own cancer journey. Accidentally diagnosed after a scan of his dicky knee, he was thrown into a world that he knew only too well from the other side: a world that soon shrank to hospital visits, sleepless and hyped-up nights on dexamethasone and life-saving chemotherapy.

Of course, I have ordered this latest book.
