In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."
Who can ever forget Harry Lime saying this in "The Third Man"? Graham Greene, who co-wrote the script with director Carol Reed, said that it was "the best line of the film", and that Orson Welles wrote it. It all came back to me when I wrote my post "Have you ever been back ...?".
I enjoyed all of Graham Greene's books, but "The Third Man" has to be seen to be enjoyed. Copies of this movie are as scarce as hen's teeth, but this is your lucky day as this one is still available on archive.org.
