Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care

Being "a valuable member of our community", I carry a Seniors Card which entitles me to a Pensioner Excursion Ticket obtainable at all newsagencies which, for a mere $2.50, gives unlimited daily travel throughout Sydney and its outer metropolitan areas on all buses, ferries and City Rail services.

However, with my time in Sydney being limited, I made the "Manly decision" and hopped onto a ferry for a round-trip to Manly.

Gone are the days of the old Manly ferries; this new lot is fast - 30 minutes from Circular Quay to Manly - and has everything: large-screen television, bar and kiosk, and even free internet access. It's still seven miles from Sydney but the cares of the world are right there on the overhead screen.

I usually stay at my Club in Martin Place, the CTA Business Club, but if you are wondering where to stay in Sydney, you could do a lot worse than book into the Sydney Central YHA opposite the Central Railway Station. They have dormitory accommodation for the young from $36 and, for the not-so-young, double rooms with private bathrooms from $108. Facilities include sauna and heated pool, rooftop gardens, self-catering kitchens, games and TV rooms - the list goes on.
