You can't choose your neighbours, but they can always ring you

One of my neighbours rang repeatedly during the American presidential election, enthusiastically espousing the merits of Trump, and then revelling in the results, claiming that at last "we now have the right man in the White House".

We once had "the right man" in our German "Reichstag" who gave us full employment which he used to manufacture weapons for the coming war, and build autobahns so as to faster mobilise his armies, and so I told my neighbour to tone it down a bit. But that's the other thing about Trump supporters: they speak of him as though he is going to save the world, but they don't like it when you speak back. In the end I just hung up.

"Trump covers up crime with scandal and covers up malice with incompetence. His administration would like you to think that they're inept, that they're just stumbling into these situations. That's not the case. And the key thing to remember is that it's not Trump as some geopolitical mastermind; it's an inner circle of Republican backers and ideological extremists, many of whom have massive financial interests and certainly their own agenda."

My neighbour never forgave me for hanging up on him, and so he's never rung back. I wished I had known about Sarah Kendzior's book to give to him as a peace-offering but then I remembered his other boast that he had never read a book in his whole life. Trump supporters don't read!
