Like Donald Horne who wanted the title of his book "The Lucky Country" to end with a questionmark, I was unsure whether to end my rhetorical question with an exclamation or question mark. Then I used both to keep everyone happy.
Which is what the government seems to be doing in their next Census form: instead of putting after the question SEX the two bog-standard boxes MALE or FEMALE -- I would've preferred a third option: YES, PLEASE! -- they're now adding the whole gamut of LGBTQI+ definitions. Given the range of diversity, imagined or otherwise, of all those weirdos out there, this should no doubt add a whole extra page to the form.
Could I make a suggestion to our Census-takers? To keep everyone happy, why not add this box to cater for absolute everyone's needs?
This should stop the riots in the streets and allow us to get back to the real problems that beset the world: endless wars and conflict, polarised politics, cost-of-living crisis - oh, and I almost forgot! - climate change.
Aren't we the Lucky Country to ignore all that and beat ourselves up over whether or not our Census form caters to the LGBTQI+ community?!
