The best time to plant trees was thirty years ago. I'd all forgotten about the inspiring wisdom of this old Chinese proverb - although I did plant a few liquid ambers which I can now sit under - and so I'm left with latching onto the second part of this proverb, "The second best time is now."
Instead of slow-growing trees, I asked Padma to scour BUNNINGS for half a dozen bougainvilleas which will grow fast enough for me to admire while I'm still here - in both senses of the word. I'll get to work planting them over the weekend, and I can already envisage "Melbourne" being totally smothered in pink and purple and golden bracts of bougainvillea.
