The kitchen bête noir

God bless our little kitchen, we love its every nook ... what we don't love is the huge cast-iron wood-fired stove which in the days of yore was used for cooking while it also heated the house and supplied the hot water.

So I emailed half a dozen kitchen renovators, "Please look at this image and give me a price indication for replacing the existing half-cookbench with a full-length bench and cupboards and matching doors underneath (width 210cm/height 90cm). The existing wood-burning stove will be removed by me. You need to remove the existing cupboard space under the current half-bench and extend it to full length and build new cupboards and instal matching doors underneath."

The silence has been deafening! Methinks unless I upgrade my inquiry to include marble benchtops, exotic timber finishes, and chrome and polished stainless steel all round I won't even get a murmur from them.

Blessed are the cracked, for they are the ones who let in the light.
