Evenings spent in front of a blazing fire are some of the compensations of life at "Riverbend" in winter. And it doesn't get much better than listening to a radio play - or "Hörspiel" as we used to call it in my youth before television began to invade our peaceful evenings.
Tonight's radio play is a dramatisation of Joseph Conrad's book "Heart of Darkness", that story within a story which follows a character named Marlow up a river into "one of the darkest places on earth" in the Congo.
Widely regarded as a critique of European colonial rule in Africa, the novel also digs deep into the dark depths of the human psyche. It is one of those books you should have read if you want to consider yourself a well-educated adult.
