Who was Georg Christoph Lichtenberg?

He was a German - of course! - who, in 1786, using a 1:√2 aspect ratio for paper sizes, proposed a standardised paper size system, of which A4 is the most commonly used size today. The British mathematician Hannah Fry calls it "the most beautiful invention of all time".

Brilliant, isn't it? And now you know!
