It was a dark and stormy and rainy, rainy night

Riverbend's scientifically calibrated rain gauge

Looking out the window this morning, I'm reminded of Noah when his son ask if he could do a spot of fishing. "Go easy on the worms, son; we only have two!" he told him. If the rain continues as it has for the past two days, I may have to build my own ark. Question is, which TWO books to take?

"I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains,
of ragged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains."

Dorothea Mackellar’s famous poem "My Country", especially its second stanza, comes to mind at a time like this. Dorothea wrote "My Country" in 1906 whilst on a trip to England. It was a hit from day one.

Most Australians - even the many Australian's who are known for their frequent misuse of the apostrophe! - know this poem though not in its entirety, so here is the full version, recited by Dorothea Mackellar:

It's still raining. No good for fishing but if you do, go easy on the worms!
