There's always Vinnies or any of the other many op-shops for finding the odd, interesting book, but there's nothing better than www.archive.org (and, less so, www.gutenberg.org) to "test-drive" a book before you part with the readies to buy it.
In the past, I've bought second-hand books from betterworldbooks.com and thriftbooks.com, who have a vast selection of books but are quite expensive once you've converted their US-dollar prices into our feeble Australian dollars and then added the extra postage from the USA.
To my delight, I discovered bookgrocer.com, who are at Tullamarine in Victoria and ship any order over fifty dollars free of postage! I ordered fifty dollars' worth on Tuesday, and these five brand-new books arrived, beautifully packaged, today, two days later! What an amazing service!
Bookgrocer, you've won me over!
