You can have your cake and bake it too!

I've just found a recipe for German-style 'Honigkuchen' - click here - in German, of course, so I translated it into English for Padma to work her magic in the kitchen. Padma, are you reading this?

Ingredients:

  1. 300g honey
  2. 150g brown sugar
  3. 150g butter
  4. 600g all-purpose wheat flour
  5. Pinch of salt
  6. 100g almond meal
  7. 1 teaspoon cardamon powder
  8. 1 teaspoon ginger powder
  9. 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  10. 1 teaspoon nutmeg powder
  11. 3 large spoon water
  12. 8g "Pottasche"
[I think that's bicarbonate of soda]
  13. 2g "Hirschhornsalz"
[I think that's cream of tartar]
  14. 2 eggs

STOP PRESS: two good teaspoons of baking power will do for 12) and 13)

Instructions:

  1. Melt honey and sugar and butter on low heat
  2. Mix flour with salt, almond meal, cardoman, ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg
  3. Dissolve baking powder in water, and stir into lukewarm paste under 1)
  4. Stir eggs into cooled-down paste under 3)
  5. Little by little knead flour into paste under 4)
  6. Heat oven to 180 degree Celsius
  7. Coat baking dish with butter and fill with paste under 5)
  8. Bake for 70-80 minutes

ALDI, eat your heart out! None of your factory-"Honigkuchen" this year!
